All ages flip out at Point Mallard
Park’s first Extreme Tumble, hottest event in town!
Decatur, AL -- With
temperatures soaring beyond the 100 degree mark, over forty
contestants and their loyal fans braved the searing heat at the
first No Fear Extreme Tumble held at Point Mallard’s water park on
Saturday, August 18th. Contestants, ranging in age from 2 years old
through 34 years, flipped, rolled, and handspringed their way across
a 48 foot tumbling mat, earning scores for skill and showmanship.
Event producer and
Parks & Recreation marketing director, Julianne Lowman said the
event, though it took place on one of the hottest days of the
season, was a success due in part to the support of sponsor Pepsi of
Decatur, distributor of No Fear energy drink as well as area
cheerleading and gymnastics coaches.
“We all had a
very good time and think this event was great!” says Coach Keith
Barksdale of Peak Performance Tumble and Cheer, Inc of Arab.
Rene Stephenson, mother of 10 year old
Madeline, said she enjoyed “the casualness of the event”, stating
there was “no pressure” for her daughter Maddie, who wound up
receiving a 3rd place trophy for her talents. “My
daughter was thrilled to receive a trophy,” says Stephenson.
The event was the
brainchild of Lowman after watching young teens tumbling last summer
on the grass at the waterpark. She felt an outdoor event could draw
a great deal of attention, particularly with the summer Olympics
approaching in 2008. After securing the title sponsorship of No
Fear energy drink, the event’s “extreme theme” was born.
“A good idea is
nothing without a support system. It takes the commitment of good
people, businesses and organizations to create any quality event”,
says Lowman. “I have no doubt in my mind this event can grow to
impressive levels, but it couldn’t happen without that kind of
assistance.”
For example, all
contestants received free t-shirts, water bottles and No Fear
beverages just for entering. Pepsi of Decatur not only provided
those items, but added a year supply of the No Fear energy drink to
each first place winner. Point Mallard presented 2008 season passes
to the waterpark, Ryan’s of Decatur awarded free dinners plus movie
and Space and Rocket Center tickets were also added to the prize
packages. Other prizes presented included a new mongoose bicycle,
stuffed animals, and a hot air balloon ride for two courtesy of the
Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau and much more.
The event was also video taped and will be aired on YouTube.com in
the coming weeks.
